About the Strikethrough Text Generator

Crossing out text on most platforms is harder than it should be — Discord, Instagram, and many social apps don't offer a native strikethrough button, and even where markdown-style tildes work, the effect can look inconsistent or fail entirely in bios, usernames, or comment fields. The Strikethrough Text Generator solves this by converting ordinary text into strikethrough-styled text using Unicode combining characters, so the line-through effect is baked directly into the characters themselves rather than relying on app-specific formatting. Despite the names, "Double" is a short slash (U+0337) and "Tilted" is a wavy tilde overlay (U+0334). Pick whichever looks right in the app you are pasting into.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Every character gains one invisible combining mark, so "hello" becomes 10 characters. Character counters on X, Instagram bios, and form fields count those marks, so a 150-character bio fits only about 75 struck-through characters.
  • Emoji get a stroke drawn over them too, and most fonts render that poorly. Single emoji stay intact, but combined emoji (a family, a flag, a skin-tone variant) are built from several characters and the stroke is added after each part, which can pull them apart. Convert the words, then add emoji afterwards.
  • Screen readers may read each letter separately or announce the combining marks, and search engines and in-app search usually will not match the struck-through word. Do not use it for text people need to find or hear clearly.
  • Where real formatting exists, use it instead: Discord and Reddit accept ~~text~~, WhatsApp accepts ~text~. Unicode strikethrough is for places with no formatting at all, such as display names, bios, and plain-text fields.
  • If the line looks misaligned, it is the font, not the text. The same characters can sit high, low, or slightly offset depending on the app and device reading them.
