About the PDF Text Extractor

Getting text out of a PDF by selecting and copying works until the document is long, the columns are unusual, or the selection keeps grabbing headers and page numbers. This tool reads the text layer directly, page by page, and hands you the whole thing at once — ready to copy or download as a .txt file.

The extraction runs in your browser, so the document is never uploaded. That matters for the sort of files people usually want text from: invoices, reports, research papers and contracts.

One limitation is worth understanding up front. A PDF only contains text if it was created from a digital document. A scanned page is a photograph, and no amount of extraction will find words in it — the tool detects this case and says so rather than handing you an empty file. Reading a scan requires OCR, which is a different kind of tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did I get no text back?

The PDF is almost certainly a scan. A scanned page is an image, so there is no text layer to read. Extracting words from a scan requires OCR, which is a different kind of tool.

Does it keep the page structure?

Line breaks are preserved and you can optionally mark where each page begins. Complex layouts such as multiple columns may come out in reading order rather than visual order.

Can I download the result?

Yes. Copy it to the clipboard or download it as a .txt file encoded in UTF-8.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The text is extracted in your browser and never sent anywhere.
